It starts with a fighting tournament, where the fighters are drawn into the fight by a combination of technology and ancient magic. An evil fighter is freed and steals the artifact that makes this possible, and molds the fights to his ends. Everyone is warned not to compete, but someone is forced to spread the misinformation that it is safe again when her lesbian lover is held captive. Any help?

fairly recent... since '04, I'd think. there's an "ancient magic" aspect to it, involving a magic sword and some other artifact... I seem to remember a character having to meet someone in an insane asylum in order to find the secret to defeating this BigBad... More of a Mortal Kombat/ tekken feel to it though... (Isn't DOA, Mortal Kombat, or Tekken though.)
