Does this person like me?
I am 27 years old, college graduate, work hard at my job. have suffered from social anxiety and obsessive thoughts all my life and I started attending a new church in September, and also that same month started talking to a therapist about my SA and obsessive thoughts. At my new church, I am interested in both worship and trying to make friends. I am very quiet due to my SA, and in the 20+ weeks that I have been there I most likely havent met people half way with initiating a conversation. One person in particular, a man about 10 years older than me, I am interested in becoming friends with him and his wife. This man talks to me pretty much each week (hi, how are you? hows work? hows your family) and has complimented me about him perceiving me as "smart or intelligent" a couple times. I havent had a chance to talk to his wife yet, but I am interested in making friends with him and her, and my question is, how can you tell if someone is just being polite to you in welcoming you to a church versus wanting to get to know you? Like I said, I have horrible obsessive thoughts in addition to the SA, so I overanalyze everything. I notice this man has a hard time making eye contact with me - and I am not sure if its because I am shy and he's uncomfortable or if its his own issue. I have probably only done 10 percent at initiating a conversation so do you think if I meet him and others half way, that anything can change or will it likely stay the same? If you compliment someone a few times, that doesnt mean you dislike them, right? or could it just mean they are just being polite? please help me I want to make friends.

Sounds likes hes interested in you. Try talking to him more and be nice to them and his family
